Buroform is a diverse team full of talent. Curious what it’s like to work with us? Take a look behind the scenes and meet David Geelen, Project Manager.
Hello, I’m David — father of two and part of a family of advertisers, creatives and graphic designers. I’ve been working in the graphic industry for twenty-two years now, five of which have been with Buroform.
About five years ago, I started at Buroform as a graphic designer and DTP specialist, but over time my role has grown and become much more diverse. I’m now a project manager, responsible for our larger clients who need more than just print work. That can include POS displays or other promotional materials, visuals or illustrations, window stickers, shop decoration — you name it. Clients can come to me with any question, and I’ll find a solution. I coordinate and manage everything. I even help set up displays or stick labels on paint cans and similar tasks. Over time, I’ve built genuine friendships with many clients, which gives me a lot of freedom and allows me to fully express my creativity. Ultimately, you can describe my job quite simply: I do everything I can to help our clients succeed — to make sure their brand stands out in the best possible way.
I studied graphic design at Sint-Lucas and have been active in the industry ever since. I’ve worked as a graphic designer and art director in several advertising agencies, and spent some time in a digital printing company. At one point, a friend of mine decided to leave his job at Buroform to go on a world trip. He recommended me to management as his potential successor. My first project was one for Kellogg’s — it went well, and from there, everything took off quickly.
Starting the day with a good cup of coffee — or more than one. I can’t go without it. Then I catch up on the news and entertain the kids before braving the traffic on my way to the Buroform offices. Once I arrive, I go through my emails, plan out my day, and stop by the production department to make sure everything is well understood. After that, the real work begins, and I tackle my projects based on priority.
Hectic! I’ll admit, that’s partly my own doing. I always try to stay available for clients. If someone sends an email, I respond as quickly as possible. Of course, that means I’m constantly jumping from one thing to the next. It might sound chaotic, but for me, that’s exactly how things work best.
I’m very much a perfectionist by nature, which means I carry out all my tasks to the extreme. I treat every project as if it were my own. I always put myself in the client’s shoes — how would I want this project to be delivered if I were them? That’s my starting point, and that’s where I set the bar for myself. When I’m working on something, I find it hard to let go. It has to be right before I can go home. I even help with packing sometimes, just to make sure everything leaves on time for the client. And for complex POS display orders, I meticulously draw out the entire layout for the suppliers, so they know exactly what needs to be done.
There are several, without meaning to sound self-satisfied. But yes, there are projects I’m proud of. I think of Kellogg’s, for example — we once decorated their entire interior with Tony the Tiger illustrations in different poses. I helped develop that concept and drew all the illustrations myself. The response was overwhelming. The same goes for projects we did for Hino, Wellpet, and Scania.
The freedom. It allows you to take ownership of your projects and achieve great results — sometimes even beyond expectations. There’s always a new challenge waiting for you, which keeps the job exciting and engaging. On top of that, I really love the atmosphere here. At Buroform, we work hard, but there’s always room for a good laugh. There’s a true hands-on mentality that creates a very positive vibe in the workplace!
Enjoying my free time. During the weekend, I completely switch off. Buroform goes on pause for a bit, and my focus is entirely on my friends, family and kids.
My wife is from Japan. If I weren’t doing what I do now, I’d move there and open a steakhouse or a Belgian beer shop. Not an ordinary one — I’d fully throw myself into it and make it something truly original.
Just be yourself. I think it’s incredibly important to show who you are and what you can do. Be honest with yourself — that’s how you get the furthest.
Stay tuned. We’ll keep sharing stories about every member of our team, so you’ll find out what it’s really like to work at Buroform.
