Brochures with staples and brochures with squareback staples

Brochures are one of the most popular and versatile printed products. They offer plenty of space for your message, product overview or company information, and are also handy and easy to distribute. There are various ways to bind a brochure. The two best-known techniques are stapling (saddle stitching and eyelet stapling) and squareback stapling. Read more about the differences, advantages and applications below.

What are classic stapled brochures?

In a stapled or saddle-stitched brochure, sheets of paper are held together in the middle, on the fold line, by staples. This is a very common binding method for brochures with a smaller and medium page thickness. You can also opt for eyelet staples if you would like to be able to store the brochure in a ring binder.

Advantages:

  • Economical: stapled brochures are relatively inexpensive to produce.
  • Fast turnaround time: production time is shorter than with advanced binding techniques.
  • Suitable for smaller brochures: ideal for brochures with a limited number of pages (usually up to approximately 64 pages, depending on the paper weight).
  • Application: magazines & periodicals, company and product brochures, club or association magazines, leaflets for events

What is squareback stapling?

Squareback stapling (also known as “square fold binding”) uses the same staples as stapled brochures, but with an extra finish: after stapling, the spine is pressed into a square shape. This gives the brochure the look of a perfect-bound (glued) brochure, but remains economical and flexible in production.

Advantages:

  • Professional appearance: the square spine looks sleeker and more luxurious than a standard stapled spine
  • Easy to stack: thanks to the flat spine, you can store the brochures upright in a cupboard or stack them efficiently
  • Expandable: squareback stapling is often suitable for brochures of up to approximately 80-96 pages, depending on the paper weight.
  • Application: catalogues or product overviews, high-quality company brochures, programme or annual reports, portfolios and lookbooks.

Decision aid: when should you choose staples or squareback staples?

  • Number of pages: Does your brochure have many pages (more than 64) and would you like a sturdy, sleek spine? Then squareback stapling is the right choice. For a smaller number of pages, saddle stitching usually provides sufficient strength.
  • Appearance and look: Do you want a neater, more “book-like” look? The square spine of squareback stapling gives a luxurious look. For an informal or low-budget brochure, stapling is perfectly adequate.
  • Budget: Stapled brochures are usually slightly cheaper than squareback stapling. For limited print runs or smaller budgets, stapling is therefore a popular choice.

Delivery time and shipping

For both classic stapled brochures and squareback staples, we can usually dispatch production 4 working days after approval for printing. Please note that the exact delivery time depends on factors such as the print run, the paper selected and any additional finishes.
