What seems like an impossible task to others is everyday stuff for our expert printer Jan. He’s a real jack-of-all-trades. With 25 years of experience under his belt, including 4 at Buroform, Jan is a valuable member of our team. Every day, he juggles pallets of paper, pots of ink and printing plates as if it were nothing. But be warned: anyone who claims that printing is child’s play had better stay away from him!
A conversation with the man behind the printing machines: Jan van den Broeck.
You’ll usually find me working on the offset machines. My duties include both conventional offset and, for the past few years, LE-UV offset printing. I also have a lot of experience as a letterpress printer, so I like to help out in that department from time to time.
In addition, I make sure that our machines are always in top condition. Machine maintenance is essential to guarantee the high quality of our printed matter and to ensure that everything runs smoothly. It’s a varied role, but I enjoy the variety and the technical challenges that come with it.
Printing is much more than just pressing “start”. Before we let the printing press do its work, we start with careful preparation. It begins with a thorough inspection of the press and the material before printing begins. We set the machine accurately, check the colours and make adjustments where necessary to ensure that everything is consistent.
During printing, we regularly check the quality of the prints to immediately notice and correct any deviations. We do all this with an eye for detail and a commitment to perfection, so that the end result is always of the highest quality.
Many people don’t realise how varied and technical our work actually is. They often think it’s just a matter of pressing a few buttons, but there’s so much more to it than that. The machines have to be perfectly adjusted to the type of paper being used, and we also constantly monitor the quality during printing. It’s a job that requires a lot of patience, attention to detail and technical knowledge.
‘With all the special projects we deliver, I am proud that I have been able to make a significant contribution to them.’
– Can you give an example?
“Certainly. When we recently went to a pub with the team, I was given a book that I had worked on. It’s a nice feeling to come across that work outside the walls of Buroform.”
Oh dear, a morning ritual? Nothing special. After breakfast, I jump in my car. On the way, I listen to Radio 1 to hear what’s going on in the world, or I tune in to De tijdloze on Studio Brussel.
On the one hand, there are the great projects I get to work on, but my colleagues are also a very important and indispensable part of my job. I feel closest to my colleagues in production. It’s wonderful to work together as a team and ensure that the printed matter leaves the door on time and to the highest quality standards.
Head chef… Or lived off my investments! 😉 But how, that’s another question. I would have liked to be a head chef, but I practise that craft every day at home for my family. So it’s the best of both worlds.
At the weekend, I can often be found at the rugby pitches, watching my two sons play. I enjoy watching them play and cheering them on.
‘Do not judge a book by its cover.’
