During “Showtime”, a virtual event organised by Heidelberg on 23 June, the press manufacturer unveiled the new Speedmaster CX 104. At the same time, the machine also made its world debut at the “China Print” trade fair in Beijing.

The Speedmaster CX 104 has been given a new ergonomic design and new technical features. The offset press is extremely versatile and can be configured as a machine for producing packaging, commercial printing or special applications. ‘It is a versatile and extremely flexible platform. I don’t think there is a comparable press in its category,’ said Jens Kalbantner, the R&D project manager for the CX 104.

A game changer

Those who opt for the new Speedmaster CX 104 start with a basic model that can be configured in various ways. The press can have up to 15 printing units, making it up to 30 metres long. ‘In theory,’ specifies Florian Franken, the product director (photo). However, he does indicate that two orders for such a configuration are already being processed. ‘It is not always the fastest or the most powerful that survives, but the one that best adapts to the situation. And that is precisely where the Speedmaster CX 104 has strong advantages: the press can evolve and is extremely flexible,’ he adds.

According to Franken, Heidelberg wanted to build a press that could adapt to the needs of a wide range of customers: “Commercial printers in Europe and North America are looking for flexibility, but also a high degree of automation. At the same time, we also wanted to meet the needs of the markets in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. These markets are served by industrial packaging printers who produce up to 15 to 16 million prints per year. They need a robust and reliable machine. And finally, customers also want a specialised and personalised machine for special applications.”

The Speedmaster CX 104 produces at a speed of 15,000 to 16,500 sheets per hour and can handle a wide variety of substrates, from 0.03 mm to 1 mm. Heidelberg also offers a number of special packs for thin substrates, cardboard or plastic as options.

Buroform put it to the test

In Belgium, the press was already tested in practice at the Buroform printing company. Jesse Marynen, chief print officer at the Mechelen-based printing company, testified about this on Showtime: “We were looking for a machine that could handle both large and small print runs. We print a lot of uncoated paper and our customers want the best print and reproduction quality. And those are the features we found in the CX 104.”

Other improvements and technical features
  • The CX104 is controlled by Prinect Press Centre XL 3 with IntelliStart 3.0, a new control system that is “as easy to use as a smartphone”.
  • A new coating unit that has been “completely redesigned” and scores particularly well in terms of ergonomics.
  • A new screen roller for the coating unit simplifies the replacement of Anilox rollers: a single operator is sufficient. Because the roller is lighter, it can be replaced 75 per cent faster – in 1 minute 20 seconds instead of 5 minutes 30 seconds.
  • The WashAssistant optimises washing cycles.
  • A new extraction system reduces ink mist and emissions, making the air in the workshop cleaner.

New developments in finishing

Showtime also saw the introduction of the XL 106-D rotary die-cutting system, in a single-unit configuration. This reduces energy consumption and the ecological footprint compared to the previous model, which had two units. Polar, for its part, presented a new cutting system, the DCC-12. This makes it possible to increase productivity by up to 25 per cent and to produce ten packages per minute instead of eight. Another development from Polar is the AirGo Jog, which automates the preparation process. Heidelberg also presented the new PerfectGrip folding cylinder, which combines new materials with a new geometry.
