Foil printing tips and tricks

27 August 2024 /

Foil printing is extremely popular. Yet its possibilities remain too often overlooked. Our foil printing expert dusts off this centuries-old printing technique, shares its deepest secrets and answers the most frequently asked questions.

1. Is it possible to create relief with foil printing?

Yes, it is possible, although the impressions tend to be small. Unfortunately, it is not possible to achieve the same deep impression as with letterpress. Unless, of course, you combine foil printing with blind embossing and/or intaglio printing, which creates an unrivalled effect!

2. What is the minimum font size for foil printing?

To give you the best advice, we need to see your design. One thing is certain: small fonts and images with small adjacent areas are not suitable for foil printing. A font size of 8 points or less is simply too small.

If you are working with fine details, make sure that your line thicknesses are at least 0.3 mm thick. If you do not do this, there is a chance that some of the detail will be lost during the exposure of the plate.

3. How should I indicate special processes in my file?

Die lines, arrangements, saler cut lines, perforations, edge colouring and other elements or processes that complement foil printing must have their own layer in your file. Set them to overprint and give them a spot colour with the correct name so that our printers can switch this colour on and off as needed.

4. Are foil swatches available?

We work with various partners, so you can always be sure of the right foil for your project. We will make sure you are well informed of the options in advance.

5. Are there specific design requirements for adding colour to the edge?

For the best results with foil printing, it is best not to let illustrations or images run over the cutting edge. By keeping the impression at a distance from the edge, it remains clearly defined. Small graphic elements such as lines and small printed text can overlap. Large graphic areas can cause problems.

6. Can I add colour to the cut edge of my die-cut business cards?

In principle, no, although it is possible with simple die-cutting such as a circle. However, paper edges that have been cut with a die cannot be coloured cleanly enough to meet our quality standards.
