Customer in the spotlight: Samuel Vanhoegaerden

16 March 2021 /

From Warhol, Bacon and Lichtenstein to Panamarenko, Dotremont and Ensor. Anyone who enjoys savouring modern art should head to Knokke to visit Samuel Vanhoegaerden. In his gallery, you can regularly admire exhibitions by some of the greatest names in art. Quite often, these exhibitions are accompanied by an equally impressive art book and quite often, we have the honour of printing it!

Where does your fascination for modern art come from?

Samuel Vanhoegaerden: “It was never really my intention to end up in the art world. I studied economics and wanted to start a career in the banking sector. Until, through my former father-in-law, I came into contact with modern art. Twenty years ago, I started buying small pieces myself. At first, I worked without a gallery, but after about four years I decided to establish myself in Knokke. There, you reach the right audience and have the opportunity to build long-term relationships.”

What determines whether or not you include an artwork in your collections?

Samuel Vanhoegaerden: “Because I buy everything myself, I first and foremost have to like a piece personally. I always choose based on my own taste, the historical significance and the aesthetic value. Only when those three criteria are met do I include a work or collection in my gallery.”

Many of your solo exhibitions are accompanied by a beautiful, matching catalogue, where does that love for art books come from?

Samuel Vanhoegaerden: “When I organise an exhibition, I want everything to be just right. From the framing to the invitations, everything is carefully thought through. When I showcase a beautiful solo collection, I often find it valuable to catalogue those works as well. That approach resonates with many people. The Codex Panamarenko, for example, from a few years ago, has become a sought-after book. Recently, it was even offered for sale for 700 euros on an online auction site.”

How important is a good printing partner to you?

Samuel Vanhoegaerden: “I know very well what I want. I have my own vision for every art book, but I also really appreciate being guided by people with expertise. I’ve known Buroform for over twenty years now and know what to expect. There’s always that little extra possible. Many choices can’t be made as an outsider if you don’t have a graphic background. At Buroform, I know that everything is handled professionally and with a customer-oriented approach, which makes so much more possible. There’s a truly beautiful work ethic, a sense of pride that I find in everyone involved in the printing process, from the designers who take care of the layout to the people operating the press itself. Every team member is genuinely proud of their work and it shows. That’s incredibly inspiring.”
