Client in the spotlight: Kunst in Huis

31 August 2022 /

Art can elevate a home or office space to a higher level. Not just because of its aesthetic appeal. Art also sparks conversation, evokes emotions, and encourages creativity. More and more people are becoming convinced of this. However, art often comes with a price tag: the threshold for bringing a work of art into your home is often high. Fortunately, there are initiatives such as Kunst in Huis, which allow you to borrow and even purchase art easily and at affordable prices.

The organisation promotes contemporary artists from Flanders and Brussels who are just starting out, giving them a solid boost at the start of their professional careers. The collection now consists of more than 5,000 works by some 370 artists. A wonderful initiative, which we wanted to know everything about. We sat down with communications officer Jolien Deweerdt for more information and explanation.

Hey Jolien, could you first explain how the Kunst in Huis initiative actually came about?

‘Kunst in Huis has been around for 44 years now. The idea originated in 1988. At the time, various cultural centres joined forces to make contemporary visual art more accessible to the general public. The approach was twofold. On the one hand, the aim was to bring people into contact with emerging artists and their work in an accessible way. On the other hand, the aim was to give emerging talent more visibility, so that they could get a helping hand. To this day, that concept remains at the heart of Kunst in Huis.’

How exactly does Kunst in Huis work?

‘Kunst in Huis offers a home to new generations of emerging artists and has branches in Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven, Brussels and Kortrijk. Our collection currently consists of around 5,000 works by some 370 artists. The collection is constantly growing and ranges from photography and illustrations to painting, spatial and graphic work. As a private individual, you can borrow the works and purchase them if you wish. We offer a subscription formula of 12 euros per month, which can be cancelled on a monthly basis. You can also exchange the artworks as often as you like, so you can regularly bring something new into your home. All artworks can be viewed on our website, where you can also reserve them at a branch of your choice.’

The collection is divided into two segments: one for private individuals and one for businesses. What is the difference?

‘Currently, around 150 businesses have a subscription. There are two separate formulas for them. The Mono subscription means that for a fixed annual fee, you can choose and collect 1 to 4 works of art yourself. The Multi subscription is slightly more extensive: for a fixed annual fee, they can borrow 5 or more works of art. In that case, we first organise an online meeting to clarify the concept and listen to your wishes and interests. Our artistic advisor will then visit your premises to assess the situation and develop an artistic proposal for the spaces in question. Of course, you are not bound by this proposal. You are also free to choose the works yourself. Once you have made your choice, the works will be delivered and hung by a colleague. The interesting thing is that everything is 100% tax deductible.

Presumably, many people consider renting art. What if they are interested but want to wait and see how things develop?

We understand that renting art is not a decision that can be made overnight. On our website, you can easily create a profile and like artworks. This gives you an idea of what’s available and what you like, and you can take your time to decide and subscribe at a later date. Our Instagram page is also interesting to follow for this reason. We always post new artists and artworks that we are adding to the collection on the page.’

You offer a platform to emerging artists. How exactly does that collaboration work?

‘We are constantly looking for emerging talent to expand our collections. Our artistic director Claudine Hellweg and an external jury of experts, whom we call ‘the Good Noses’, actively scout for new talent. In addition, we organise an open call twice a year, during which artists can submit their candidacy to collaborate with Kunst in Huis. More and more talent is finding its way into these selections. And not only because, as an artist, you gain much more visibility through our website, Instagram and events such as Antwerp Art Weekend, showcase projects and exhibitions in our branches. You receive a loan fee for each rental. If your work is sold, you receive 70% of the proceeds. That’s a lot more than in the average gallery.’

You chose Buroform as your printing partner. How do we fit into your story as a printing company?

‘Kunst in Huis strives for quality in everything we do. We found that philosophy reflected in your company too. What’s more, we don’t have our own graphic design team. The fact that Buroform has so much expertise convinced us to choose you. We distribute a lot of printed matter in cultural centres, from flyers and leaflets to posters. It is important that your material is not only sturdy and high-quality, but also visually striking. People are much more attracted to a message that is presented in an attractive and sustainable way. We also offer art vouchers in an art box, which we also have made by you. Gifts like these need to be striking, and we know that you will do a good job.
