365 days of inspiration

All the possibilities of the HP Indigo captured in 365 days

Testing, trying out and experimenting. Our HP Indigo offers so many possibilities that working with it is a never-ending journey of discovery. To give you more insight into the endless possibilities, we have put together this calendar: 365 days of inspiration, created with passion and enthusiasm. And the necessary trial and error.

Cover

First impressions count, right? Check. For the cover, we chose gold paper that immediately sets the tone for our calendar. Because HP Indigo inks are semi-transparent, we added an extra layer of white ink under the CMYK print. This brings out the colours even better.

Stickers to highlight your favourite days

The stickers feature the typical Buroform ink waves. Underneath the CMYK print, we applied two layers of silver ink, which gives almost the same effect as cold foil. The big advantage for you is the price: depending on your print run and format, digital printing is much cheaper. Thanks to the HP Indigo, we can also personalise your design very easily!

Incidentally, the die cut for our stickers was initially too small. This caused the sticker sheet to come loose in some places, resulting in unsightly bubbles around the stickers. Testing, testing, testing: the key to success! #printingexperts

January

A solid silver ink (200%) with CMYK printing on top. The principle used is also visualised on the back of the sheet for clarification.

The idea is to create the illusion of cold foil, but with the advantages of digital printing (such as personalisation). Silver ink is transparent with the HP Indigo. To achieve a nice opaque and metallic result, we therefore have to print in two layers, or at 200%.

Also good to know: compared to cold foil, this ink has a slightly more matt appearance.

February

Attract attention with fluorescent inks. Please note: if you choose this option, it is best not to use transparent areas over fluorescent ink. This can easily result in dirty pink effects, causing you to lose the fluorescent look.

March

A fun experiment with white and black ink on coloured paper.

The white ink from the HP Indigo provides slightly less coverage. If you want almost 100% coverage, hot foil is generally the best option. The only disadvantage in that case is that you have to work with a cliché, which makes it more expensive.

The solution is this digital white ink. A price-conscious alternative that also offers the possibility to fully personalise your printed matter. We print two layers on top of each other (200%), so that the coverage is almost perfect.

April

Sometimes you can achieve a similar effect to ink by using special paper. You can see this very clearly here. No special inks were used on this April page. However, the cut-outs in the image allow the metallic paper to take over the function of the ink and make the scales shine.

June

There is one spot available on our press for an extra fluorescent colour. Pink, green, yellow or orange: the choice is yours!

Tip: transparent CMYK areas over a fluorescent colour do not always give the best results. We speak from experience.

July

Ever heard of variable data printing? Or the HP SmartStream Designer plugin? You can do the craziest things with it!

Our creative department developed 1,500 unique copies of this calendar in no time. The pattern you see on the right-hand side of the month of July is scaled and rotated differently each time. Compare your calendar with those of your fellow creatives and you will see: July is a unique month!

August

Not obvious: metallic ink on rough uncoated paper. But here we show that it can be done perfectly. Tintoretto gesso is one of the roughest types of paper that works on the HP Indigo. Yet the pure silver ink looks very refined. This does not apply to the other shades in overprint: the above combination should have been a subtle interplay between yellow, silver and gold, but the silver dominates too strongly.

So the test was partially successful and immediately provides a useful reflection for your design: silver on rough, uncoated paper is certainly possible, but be careful with transparency and overprinting in other colours.

September

Thanks to HP Indigo, colours appear incredibly deep and powerful, regardless of the medium. Take this design on Gmund Original Vergé, an uncoated, rough paper type. The texture enhances the whimsical tactility of the walnuts and beautifully demonstrates how paper and ink can interact to achieve the desired effect.

October / November

No special feature of the HP Indigo here, just a clear example of matte versus glossy laminate. Both months were printed on the same paper, with the same machine and the same inks. The glossy laminate gives a much more pronounced effect and is ideal if you are working with photos and deep colours. With matte laminate, you lose some of the intensity.

December

A solid metallic silver on metallic paper, with a photo on top of that: what would that look like, we wondered? The metallic effect is clear, but whether that comes from the paper or the solid silver ink: who can say? In any case: test passed!

Overview 2021

One that couldn’t be left out: black paper with 200% white ink on the front, white paper with black ink on the back. Simple but significant, isn’t it?
