‘Every name counts’ is a heart-rending tribute by Kazerne Dossin to restore the names and dignity of the 25,843 victims who were deported from the Dossin Barracks during the Second World War.
A story that can only be told properly on paper.
How do you give weight to something that cannot be grasped?
How do you bring 25,000 names together without them becoming anonymous?
How do you commemorate without trivialising?
For Kazerne Dossin, the answer was clear: not digitally, but tangibly. The Every Name Counts project had to be more than a list or database — it had to be a personal, physical experience. Something you hold in your hand, slowly open, and read with attention.
Each name was given space. Paper became a stage. And so print became a form of remembrance. Quiet, pure and thoughtful.
Daneel Bogaerts, the designer behind this impressive brochure, originally chose “Gmund beer pilsner” as the cover material. Unfortunately, because there was no certainty about stock and delivery times from our suppliers, we seamlessly switched to a strong alternative: Arena Rough, which simulated the colour of the beer paper. This switch did not detract from the character of the brochure.
Inside the brochure, the storyline continues on Munken Pure Rough. This paper invites you to feel and hold it, bringing the weighty story of the project even closer.
