Alechinsky

Samuel Vanhoegaerden honours Alechinsky

Samuel Vanhoegaerden will be at the BRAFA Art Fair at Brussels Expo until this weekend. Once again, he is presenting one of his favourite artists. This time, Samuel is honouring Pierre Alechinsky (95), the famous Belgian artist who conquered the art world with his free style of working.

For more than half a century, his works have combined abstraction and figuration. With his vibrant colour palette, he has managed to amaze and captivate several generations.

His oeuvre can be found in galleries all over the world. And his more recent work remains just as fresh and astonishing. Alechinsky made the transition to the 21st century effortlessly, earning him a place alongside other great Belgian artists such as James Ensor, Paul Delvaux and René Magritte.

Not a single centimetre of his medium is left untouched. Alechinsky adds so-called “marginal notes” to the story he tells in his work. Samuel therefore found edge printing to be the perfect technique to use in the Alechinsky art book.

Printed edges

Every side of a book offers something interesting to do, including the edges (the edges of the pages). You can colour them gold or silver, or you can print an image or text on them.

Gold on the edge originated in the 19th century and served several purposes: it gave the book a luxurious look and protected it from light and insects that like to eat paper. Over the years, the technique has evolved into a creative application that now allows you to print images or text on the edges of your paper.
