On 17 November, the moment had finally arrived: Café Cliché, edition two. This time, we took a completely different approach — because of, well, you know why — we brought the event, along with an accompanying inspiration package, straight into people’s living rooms. A dose of Buroform TV avant la lettre, and it definitely left us wanting more!
Couldn’t make it? No worries. On 28 January, we’re planning a second broadcast. Subscribe to the Café Cliché newsletter, and who knows — you might soon receive an invitation!
After the success of Café Cliché x Color Class(h) (2019), our minds quickly turned to a next edition. Letterpress, hot foil and related printing techniques are not only everywhere these days — combined with the right paper, they offer endless creative possibilities. That’s why we planned to gather a group of experts to fully immerse you, as a graphic designer, in the world of typographic printing. Scheduled to appear were: print historian Patrick Goossens, graphic designer An Eisendrath, Sofie Jacobs from Papyrus, cliché supplier Repro Hermans, and our very own paper and print expert Valérie Maes — all ready to share their secrets with you.
And then disaster struck. Our invitations had barely been sent out when the coronavirus threw a spanner in the works. Since cancelling was never an option, Café Cliché was first postponed and then completely reinvented: edition two would become a home event, served via video but seasoned with the same passionate speakers. The camera quickly became our best friend (ahem 😉).
We wrapped it all up just in time — quite literally on the day itself. It was exhausting, extremely nerve-racking, but also incredibly rewarding to see that everything eventually came together perfectly.
The broadcast was kicked off by our manager, Jesse. Afterwards, Café Cliché’s driving force, Valérie Maes, took over the service and guided viewers from one expert to the next. Patrick Goossens opened the session from his treasure trove of printing history, taking us back in time — from Johannes Gutenberg’s very first printing press to the Heidelberg platen presses we still use today. Then it was An Eisendrath from Studio Anorak who took the floor to speak about her great passion: typographic printing. With her unmistakable smile and love for the craft, she shared her enthusiasm for letterpress and artisanal printwork.
We wrapped things up with an analysis of the set of inspiration cards that each Café Cliché participant had received in advance. Everyone who had registered got an inspiration package delivered to their doorstep, containing a booklet that combined various techniques and paper types. In our reception hall, An Eisendrath and Sofie Jacobs from Papyrus took their seats, while Erwin from the Dutch Repro Hermans joined remotely. Special thanks also go to our print expert (and moderator) Valérie Maes, who may just have a future as a talk show host in the making.
Thanks to the set of inspiration cards, we managed to turn this edition of Café Cliché into a truly tactile experience. The plan is to expand this collection in the future, as we continue to discover new techniques we’d love to share with you.
Do you still have questions about these printing techniques or Café Cliché? Valérie will be happy to provide you with all the answers!
