In April, we made it to the finals of the Fedrigoni Top Awards, an international competition for outstanding printed matter. Not with one, but with two projects! In addition, the book “Colours make us do vibrant deeds!” was selected as Best Designed Book of the Netherlands.. Awards like these are nice. But even nicer is what precedes them: a client who dares to push boundaries, a designer with vision and a team that knows how to do it technically.
Colours make us do vibrant deeds by artist Heidi Howard and designer Mikel Orfanos impressed the jury of the Best Designed Books in the Netherlands.
The monograph brings together ten years of colourful and distinctive work by the American artist. Mikel translated her vision into a playful but very thoughtful design: Swiss binding, semi-transparent pages, no page numbering and an order determined by colour rather than content.
Together with our client Vlassak Verhulst, we were honoured to receive the Special Mention by Fedrigoni in Paris.
For high-end architectural firm Vlassak Verhulst, we created a portfolio book that feels like an object. Or a stone. Or a book? In any case, it was a technical feat, thanks to the strong collaboration between our printers and our studio.
The assignment was simple: we would create a book that would blend completely into a stone. An ambitious challenge that immediately got us thinking. We looked at the stone from all angles: scanning, photographing, editing… We tried everything to reproduce the texture and colour of the stone as accurately as possible in print. We chose a paper that had the same feel as the stone. Each proof brought us closer to our goal.
As the icing on the cake, we printed an embossed image on the cover, so that the Vlassak Verhulst logo appears to be carved out of the stone.
Did you know that Vlassak Verhulst himself colours in the engraved “V” on the cover by hand with a fine pencil? This is to further enhance the engraved effect. Yes, that’s how high the bar is set here.
